DETROIT(abcnews) - Hyundai is recalling over 390,000 cars in the United States and Canada due to two issues that may result in engine fires. Owners are being advised to leave their cars outside before repairs are made in one recall.
More than 203,000 Santa Fe Sport SUVs were recalled between 2013 and 2015. Any people are being called up for a second time. Brake fluid will spill into the anti-lock brake computer, causing an electrical short and potentially causing a burn. According to documentation released Tuesday by the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, owners can park outside and away from buildings until the issue is solved.
Dealers will repair a fuse and, if possible, the device. In June, the owners will be updated.
According to records, the brake computer issue has caused 18 fires in the United States, but no fatalities.
The recall, according to Hyundai, “enhances the remedy” from one released in September 2020. Following the September recall, the organization reports it continued to investigate and discovered that removing the fuse would minimize the safety risk. "Hyundai is conducting this new recall to ensure the wellbeing of its customers," the company said in a statement.
The other recall affects almost 187,000 Elantras from 2019 to 2020 and Konas and Velosters from 2019 to 2021. Both of them are powered by 2-liter engines.
Likely, the piston rings weren't properly heat-treated, resulting in engine degradation, oil leakage, and even fires. The rings could be too rough and chip, scuffing the engine cylinder, according to Hyundai. According to records, the piston problem has resulted in five fires but no casualties.
Dealers will check the engine and, if possible, repair it. They'll also add applications that detect piston noise. In late June, owners will be updated.
Hyundai and its related Korean automaker Kia have been affected by engine failure and fire issues for more than five years, impacting the owners of more than 8 million cars.
Kia recalled over 147,000 Soul and Seltos SUVs in the 2020 and 2021 model years due to a piston ring problem. The automaker said it had received four reports of fires that could be linked to the issue.
